On our new fortnightly feature ‘Tanishq NRI Bride’s Diary’, we speak to brides-to-be to hear about their wedding preps, where they’re e-shopping, their India visit plans and more!

Anjali Mirpuri (Dubai)
I am an independent Foreign Exchange Derivatives Trader and my fiancé Jason Daryanani works in his family business. Alongside he is a professional music and video director recognized by the screen name ‘Jay Mo’. We got engaged in London in Summer 2013 and we were clear we wanted a long duration between our engagement and wedding—so we have enough time to plan our dream wedding.

The Wedding
Our 3 day celebrations take place in the Christmas week of 2014, the venue is the heart of Dubai, the Intercontinental Hotel, Dubai Festival City. Jason and I couldn’t think of a destination more convenient and glamorous than UAE, our friends are coming from all over the world so it makes it easy for them to travel. We were lucky to find amazing wedding planners in Dubai who are executing our dreams into reality. The Red Velvet Events Dubai which is run by two creative and hard-working entrepreneurs, Harsha Khubchandani and Jharna Kalwani.

E-Shopping
There’s a lot you can buy on e-commerce sites but in my personal opinion (and interaction with others) not many offer great service or guarantee satisfaction. I was extremely pleased with these websites where I shopped for my trousseau- Net-A-Porter, Pernia’s Pop Up shop, The Knot and New York Dress.

India Visits
Traveling to India with an intention to shop for Indian clothes for my events, seemed a bit nerve wrecking initially considering I have always shopped abroad and have little experience with shopping here. I visited Mumbai in August, and I was taken by surprise as to how easy and convenient it is to shop at some stores. Shopping at Abu-Sandeep, Manish Malhotra, Mayurr Girotra and Ecru was an absolute pleasure. I had a great experience with Jaykumar Makhija too; he runs a by-appointment only studio in Khar. For Jewellery, I visited Zoya, Khar and Malkish Jewels in Bandra.

Prabhleen Anand (Toronto, Canada)
I am a medical science graduate and upcoming luxury fashion designer/stylist. My fiancé Gurniaz Singh Mann is an Industrial/Product designer in Mumbai. We are getting married on 27th Feb 2015 in Chandigarh. Our guests are flying in from all over North America and India. It’s an exciting time for both the families and all of us are eagerly looking forward to it!

E-Shopping
I have been regularly checking websites like exclusively.in and perniapopupshop.com for accessories and trousseau wear. Being a designer & stylist myself it’s hard for me to shop online, so I’m designing most of my trousseau myself with inputs from family. I want this to be a beautiful experience for all of us and though I’m quite clear about my overall look I keep asking my family members for suggestions. Like every bride I get confused sometimes and I need my loved ones to say ‘Yes’ or reassure me that what I’ve picked is ‘Good’!

India Visits
I will be in India in January, and I plan to do my shopping in New Delhi, Chandigarh, Patiala and Amritsar. If time permits I might visit Jaipur too. I love what the city has to offer with fabulous embroideries of gottapatti, bandhani and block prints. In Delhi I want to go to PFDC, Aza, Ritu Kumar and Satya Paul for formal wear; Amrapali and Tanishq for jewellery. In Chandigarh Talwar Sons as they are our go-to family jewellers.

Wedding Planning
A lot is done in terms of venue and event planning (thanks to family and friends who are there, it’s such a relief!!). My make-up artist has been booked after a lot of research on WeddingSutra and other fashion/ style sites. For photographers, I stumbled on the Canvera Wedding Photographers directory—there are tons of candid photographers featured there and every to-be-wed should check this online resource.

Sometimes I feel there is a lot of time left and sometimes I wonder how I’ll be able to complete so much in a short time-span. But when I want to stop worrying about wedding preps I reach out to this beautiful book ‘Wonderful Marriage’ by Lilo & Gerard Leed to re-read my favourite passage.

‘Make your wedding a celebration that brings you and your partner, and the family and friends who celebrate with you closer together, rest will take care of itself’.

Ruchi Soni (Washington D.C, USA)
Arsh and I both work at the World Bank, Washington D.C. We met at a work happy hour, where Arsh’s first reaction on seeing me was ‘she’s taken’. I on the other hand thought he was a brazen extrovert. We stayed in touch, went for long walks (and longer ones!), and moved into the grey ‘friend-zone’ which was anything but that. Coaxing by friends that we should ‘get to know each other better’ helped! With the blessings of our parents and families who are super excited at this union, we are getting married on November 30th in New Delhi.

India Visits
I went to Delhi in the very sultry summer but I’m glad I made the trip else I wouldn’t have known that getting a good lehenga, customized as per one’s needs takes up to 3 months!! I’m not very fond of shopping but at the same time I am a little paranoid about picking what suits me best so I travelled across the city- from South Extension to Chandni Chowk, malls in Vasant Kunj to the markets in Lajpat Nagar and Rajouri Garden.

Wedding To Do’s
Most of our preparations are taken care of by our parents since we are miles away. Tons of follow-up with the vendors is what come with it and again, that’s something one should be mindful of (it DOES take a lot of time and effort, and sometimes lots of patience as well). Now that shopping is done, what I’m looking forward to is working with the venue decorator  and the play list for our main functions (Arsh and I are both fond of good music, so it’s important we don’t end up with music we don’t appreciate!).
