Love Actually- Apurva Sanghvi and Samkit Shah’s Platinum Day of Love

Our initiative ‘Love Actually’ is a photo series featuring engaged couples who actively seek ideas and inspiration from WeddingSutra. The series celebrates the beautiful people in love as they start their lives together. Because real love can only begin, never end. Here, Apurva Sanghvi tells us how she met her fiance Samkit Shah, his sweet and elaborate proposal in Central Park, New York and how he pulled off the big surprise.

“Samkit and I have always believed in destiny and our love story exemplifies just that. I was born in Mumbai but have been in the US ever since I was 7. Samkit was born and raised in Mumbai but spent 4 years as an undergrad in the US. We were worlds apart, but somehow managed to retain just enough from our experiences in different countries to be ready for each other. Samkit currently manages Aakaar, his family-owned business that designs divine marble idols and wooden temples that he’s now expanding internationally, while I am a Financial Analyst at Philips Lighting in New Jersey.

Samkit and I met a few years ago during my cousin’s wedding. Samkit was my cousin’s roommate in college and was his best man at the wedding. While we hung out together, I wouldn’t say sparks were flying during the wedding, at least at my end, although Samkit definitely felt it was love at first sight for him. It wasn’t until after the wedding that he asked my cousin to approach me and ask what I thought about him. Soon after, the two of us started messaging and talking just as friends living thousands of miles apart. Little did we know what this friendship had in store for us.

Fast forward a few years later and many trips back and forth, Samkit gave me the proposal of my dreams! It was all a surprise for me and everything started with this elaborate plan to somehow get me to Central Park, New York. He had involved a lot of my family and friends to help pull off what was going to be ‘the surprise of my life’.

The weekend was supposed to be a casual one in the city hanging out with friends and family. We were supposed to meet up with one of my cousins for brunch followed by drinks with a few friends. However, the night before, Samkit ‘got’ a call informing him of a big and very important business meeting the next morning. Samkit, completely in character, very apologetically, told me he would be late for our brunch plans.

I continued on with my plans (or his plans as he had so strategically planned it) and met up with my cousin for brunch. We caught up and had a great time, she was his partner-in-crime and very soon, I got another call from Samkit telling me he’d be later than expected. He thought (pretended) I was really mad and upset with him and asked to speak to my cousin. He then suggested to her to take me to one of the hair places that she always goes to (Blo bar- a popular hair blow drying salon chain in NY). Samkit and I were supposed to meet up with two of my best friends after brunch. He went on to request my cousin to help him make up for his absence by turning the situation into a girls day and have fun since he may take a little longer. Next thing I knew, the four of us were all set for an afternoon of pampering!

As we were getting our hair done, on cue, Samkit called me once again ecstatic that he ‘got the deal’, one of the biggest in his career! He wanted to celebrate and had a surprise for us. Once we were done with our pampering session, we stepped out to find a white limo waiting for us to take us to go ‘pick him up’. We drove around NYC in a beautiful limo enjoying some champagne celebrating Samkit’s success and the deal. Eventually, we ended up at Central Park where we were going to grab some food at the ‘Boat House’ where Samkit would meet us.

We started walking towards the Boat House and little did I know, we weren’t eating at all! I followed a little stone path down to this beautifully decorated gazebo, only to find my boyfriend waiting there for me with a bouquet of roses. With a lot of help from a lot of our friends and family, the gazebo was decorated with balloons, mason jars with tea lights, and rose petals. He welcomed me with the biggest hug, walked me up into the gazebo, and got down on one knee asking me to be spend the rest of my life with him! I said ‘Yes’ and he slipped the most precious ring I’d ever seen! And  on November 22nd 2014, my boyfriend finally became my fiancé.
