One of India’s most loved cricketers, Harbhajan Singh is all set to marry actress Geeta Basra on October 29, 2015.
Designer Raghavendra Rathore and his couture team are creating Harbhajan’s wedding wardrobe. With a nod to the legendary sportsman’s respect for culture and tradition, but relying on his incredible contemporary style, silk brocades from Benares and handloom fabrics from across India have been carefully selected. The handsome young cricketing star will wear a classic royal Bikaner style achkan on his big day, designed by the RR atelier who have also crafted outfits for all the ceremonies, including the sangeet, mehndi and reception. The muses range from festive to ultra-formal and took as much as three months of meticulous design and production.
Design guru Raghavendra Rathore said, “Men should style their clothes with an essence of masculinity. Mr Singh’s penchant for a look that is modern, gender clear and inspirationally suitable for sports personalities was the key inspiration for the designs.”
As for bride Geeta Basra, designer Babita Malkani is designing outfits for the sangeet & engagement functions to be hosted in Punjab and for the Bollywood themed party in Delhi.
The designer has known the bride for a long time, “…a decade now. She worn most of my ensembles and we have an excellent rapport. When I got a call from London with the good news (of the wedding) I was ecstatic and so happy for her! We sat down at my Juhu Studio and worked out her looks. She needed an outfit for the Sangeet cum Engagement in Punjab, a completely traditional affair. She was sure she wanted deep rich jewel tones accessorized with regal, traditional jewellery – looking every bit the traditional Indian princess bride. Keeping this in mind, I designed an Indian diffusion Lehenga embellished with gold placement embroidery, a velvet blouse and attached draped dupatta with gold crystals. I’ve chosen a very deep rich color like she wanted. It’s perfect for her complexion. I used tulle and velvet to add to the traditional grandeur.”
For the glitzy Bollywood themed party at Chattarpur Farm, Delhi, Babita says, “Geeta wasn’t quite sure what she wanted except that she just wanted a glamorous look. So I’ve designed a ‘concept lehenga-gown’ in a very fresh color. I’ve added a lot of silver crystals and Swarovskis for a chic glamorous look. To add further oomph, I decided to go with silk foil fabric teamed with a diffusion drape.”
