A Bollywood Wedding in South Africa
May 10, 2013 Celebrity Wedding Pictures
Diamond magnate Vijay Shah set a new benchmark for opulence and innovation when he organised his daughter’s wedding in Belgium in 2002. This month, guests who attended the Gupta Wedding in South Africa talk about the affair as one on par with the Belgium wedding. One guest states: “If Priya Shah’s wedding was the most spectacular wedding last decade, Vega Gupta’s might be the wedding of this decade.” And while the Gupta wedding may have stirred a lot of controversy with press reports talking about the misuse of the SA military base, the Indian wedding industry is talking about the mesmerising affair co-managed by four core teams- the Gupta family members from Saharanpur and South Africa, a local event management company in South Africa who coordinated with the family office there, key employees of Sun City which was the venue for the celebrations and the Event Managers of Mumbai based Wizcraft.

The star entertainers included Sonu Nigam, Mika, Shankar Mahadevan, Manasi Scott, Shiamak Davar and his troupe. Dia Mirza, Neha Dhupia, Esha Gupta and Anil Kapoor were the star guests who mingled with the host of politicos and other invitees from India and South Africa. Close to 200 wedding specialists who included chefs, decorators, photographers, fashion stylists, makeup artists and their teams flew in from India. Ace Chef Marut Sikka and speciality cooks who worked with the Sun City chefs to prepare a bewildering choice of strictly vegetarian and non-alcoholic fare. Delhi-based designer duo Rimple and Harpreet Narula were the official stylists to help guests get ready and Mumbai’s Makeup maestros Mickey Contractor and Vipul Bhagat dressed the bride and ladies from the bride and groom’s side.

While the pleasant weather in South Africa was a good respite for the guests, the majority of who were from Delhi and North India, they couldn’t help notice how tired the bride Vega looked on Day 3 and 4, thanks to the super-hectic festivities. Fortunately, she had a week long break because tonight is the grand reception, hosted by her in-laws, the Delhi-based Jahajgarhias. The venue is a sprawling Chattarpur farmhouse where the look is being orchestrated by India’s decor king Sumant Jayakrishnan. Now you know what Delhi will be talking about next week.

A month after her nephew Uraaz’s Bahl’s wedding in Jodhpur, Parmeshwar Godrej’s daughter Nisa (36) tied the knot in Mumbai. Nisa married Kalpesh Mehta, a Wharton graduate who runs a real estate venture in India, and the wedding was a discreet, family-only celebration at the Godrejs beach side mansion in Juhu. But Nisa’s cousin brother Uraaz Bahl’s wedding in Jodhpur was a grand and fun-filled affair. A Mumbai based Entrepreneur, Uraaz is the son of late Ishwar, Parmeshwar’s sister. He married his long-time girlfriend Shaana Levy who is half-Jew, half-Gujarati.

A Picture Perfect Moment

The Majestic Umaid Bhavan

The scene then shifted to Jodhpur. The functions included a pre wedding puja & dinner at Raas Haveli, the wedding party at Umaid Bhavan and an after-party at the majestic Mehrangarh Fort. For all the wedding guests it was a weekend which will not be forgotten for a long time. “When are you renewing your vows? we want to come back” commented one of Shaana’s friend on her timeline. A Grand Gujarati and South Indian Wedding in South Mumbai
Mar 23, 2013 Celebrity Wedding Pictures, Wedding People & Planners
Sukanya Rangaraj, an editor with a prominent luxury and fashion magazine, and Atman Shah, a fourth generation businessman met in high school and their love culminated into a wedding that was a grand South Indian and Gujarati affair. A host of prominent persons from industry, politics and media and their family’s large circle of friends attended the week long celebration held across different venues in South Mumbai.

The celebrations commenced with a Black Tie theme Cocktail at Tote on the Turf. Quips Sukanya, who wore a Monisha Jaising white and gold number, “We’ve been deemed the very ‘proper’ couple, and we subscribe to all things chic. So naturally, this had to be the first event—a night under a blanket of dazzling stars unfolded and the party rocked.”
The Mehendi was an intimate affair at Sukanya’s residence in Worli. Says Anway P Bhoite, the Wedding Planner: “The temple inspired decor was replete with several bright lines of yellow marigolds suspended from a tall height, antique Ganesha idols and urlis and clusters of poetically burning diyas.” The predominantly ‘ladies’ event turned into a colourful evening of henna and dance as they swayed to a live Punjabi dhol. This was followed by lip smacking chaat and of course the deep hue of ornate mehendi on everyone’s hands.
The sunset Sangeet at Jade Garden was nothing short of a music and dance extravaganza. Lyrical, mirthful and full of joie de vivre, the couple’s family and best friends put up a Bollywood-theme dance show as an ode to the couple. Songs that best described their love, moments of laughter and memories to cherish—each act portrayed a spectrum of emotions. The entertainment didn’t end there. A band of live musicians rendered various musical hits as the amber February sun set in the background. Adding an element of surprise were traditional Garba dancers who got the crowd swaying to folk tunes. Sukanya wore a sequined Anand Kabra yellow and antique green lehenga and Atman wore a beige silk Rajesh Pratap sherwani with a brooch from Tarun Tahiliani to complement his bride’s touch of green.

The Wedding was a traditional soiree at Taj Vivanta. Signifying the best in spirit of both Tamil Iyengar and Gujarati Vaishnav ceremonies, it was a perfect blend of both rituals as the couple exchanged vows in true Vedic style. The décor too by Anway, reflected a regal and uber traditional sensibility.

The Reception at the Royal Western India Turf Club saw a winter wonderland theme where Anway P Bhoite designed a predominantly white set, embellished with crystals and fantasy props. The mood of the evening was regal and pristine. The bride wore a Bhairavi Jaikishan gold applique lehenga, Victorian style diamond jewellery from Anmol Jewellers and the groom wore a classic Dolce & Gabbana suit.

Ravi, son of Media Mogul Gautam Adhikari of SAB TV tied the knot with his childhood sweetheart Rubaina Gajiyani. The celebrations commenced with an intimate family Sangeet, after which was the traditional wedding and finally a grand reception at the Poolside Lawns of Hotel Taj Lands End.

Ravi and Rubaina
When we met Ravi and Rubaina at their pre-wedding shoot at his family home Adhikari Villa in Juhu, we asked Ravi how he met Rubaina. The shy groom smiled and replied. “Ask Rubaina”. His to-be- bride was only too happy to tell us more. “We met at Tuition classes. We were both in the eleventh standard, a year later Ravi evinced his interest in getting to know me. Only later did he tell me it was love at first sight.” Two years ago, we interacted with the Adhikari family when Ravi’s sister Urvee married Karan Vyas. This time Urvee spoke excitedly about how much more fun it was to plan her brother’s marriage. “In fact”, adds Urvee, “Now I am seriously toying with the idea of becoming a Wedding Planner. But I guess planning your family member’s wedding is quite different from doing it professionally.”

Bride Nayantara wore creations by Tarun Tahiliani and Abu Sandeep (each a masterpiece is what we hear) while industrialists, politicians, bankers and close family and friends excused themselves from work to be present at the wedding of the decade. With so many VVIPs in the city, the Kotharis, their staff and the Wedding Planners had a logistical feat to pull off while the bride’s mamas, Mukesh and Anil Ambani (Nina Kothari’s brothers) and their wives played gracious hosts. The guests could’t stop marveling about everything- the super duper arrangements, the exquisite decor created with flowers from all over the world and the divine, authentic cuisine by the best vegetarian chefs from all over India. The wedding-related responsibilities of the girl’s side over the celebrations move to the boy’s home turf Delhi, where the Bhartia’s host a Reception on 21st January.

The VIP Lounge at a Big, Fat Indian Wedding
Dec 26, 2012 Celebrity Wedding Pictures
“What is a VIP Lounge”, queried a colleague when we talked about today’s blog post. We weren’t aware of what a VIP Lounge is until some years ago when were invited to a high profile wedding reception with lots of VIP’s. The host set up a VIP Lounge, near the stage, so the powerful set after wishing the newly-weds, could sit in the lounge to interact with other VIP guests or enjoy dinner in a more private setting. Some like the Bhosale-Kadam wedding in Pune, had not only a VIP and General area, but a third area, where over one lakh invitees could only see the stage and the couple from a distance. So the wedding had three earmarked spaces- the VIP Lounge, one for Special Invitees who could stand in a line and wish the couple, and one for the General Invitees.

Anchal Arora of June8Events tells us about the VIP lounge she designed for Builder Avinash Bhosale whose daughter Swapnali wed Congressman Vishwajeet Kadam. The reception for over 1.4 lakh guests was at the Balewadi Stadium Grounds, and the VIP lounge set-up designed to accommodate 1500 VIP’s.

A Royal Gold & Maroon theme was the highlight of the VIP Lounge, the canopy was decorated with flowy gold-on-white brocade drapes and royal chandeliers. The décor was brought to life with attractive table centerpieces of red roses, and gold linen. The entrance to the lounge was enhanced with red & maroon roses and Brassicaceaes and beautifully crafted flower hangings of mokara orchids.
