The first episode of Band Baajaa Bride premiered on NDTV Good Times last night. Inspired by the film title Band Baajaa Baraat, the TV show is positioned as a Makeover Show/ Family Entertainer in which the anchors (Bharat Arora and Ambika Anand) take us through the journey of a Real Bride seeking that ‘Perfect’ Wedding day look. In the first episode, Bharat visits the home of Almora girl Rashi Agarwal who is engaged to Jaipur based Akash Gupta. The beautiful Rashi then goes to Delhi, where her style mentor Ambika Anand takes her to designer Anjalee & Arjun Kapoor for the wedding lehenga, and then to Makeup artiste Samantha Kochhar for a makeover. In between, she goes to a cooking class and there’s talk of her visiting a counsellor.
- Anchor Bharat Arora does a great job thanks to his subtle humour and style, no shaadi sugar overdose here. The first scene where he visits Rashi’s home, his interaction with her family members—all very nice!
- The bride Rashi Agarwal, chirpy & energetic acted like a ‘Real’ bride. No nervousness, drama or over-acting! She was hugely excited about visiting a Delhi ‘designer’ and at the same time, had her apprehensions, on whether they would be able to give her look, which she wanted. Right in the beginning she says to Bharat, “Marwari families want their bride to look very heavy on the Big Day”.
- For Brides, there’s so much more beyond shopping for the Big Day Outfit at Designer stores—there’s deciding what to wear for the different functions, how much to spend and what to buy where, how to match the outfit to the jewellery. And then there’s the fun street shopping for all those accessories and gift stuff. Sadly, the first episode focussed on a very basic interaction with a Big Designer and an Ace Makeup Artist—no talk about budgets, silhouettes, embroideries or trends & styles.
Our verdict, watch Band Baajaa Bride for entertainment (Thursday 9.00 pm, Saturday 10.30 am, Saturday 4.30 pm, Sunday 2.00 pm) but not sure if it’ll hold your interest for too long—if you really want Real Insights from Real Brides, and Style and Fashion tips from those who walked down the aisle there’s no better resource than our Real Brides Real Style.
