Ankita and Lee’s Platinum Love Story

Steeped in mutual respect, Ankita and Lee’s inspiring story is a reminder that true love is one that only lifts you!
Ankita Brahmaroutu, a Neurology resident at the University of Pennsylvania, met Soldier-turned-Investment Banker Lee Summerlin at a bar in Austin in 2012. Lee, who was serving in the US Army at the time, was instantly intrigued by the beautiful medical student with sparkling intellect and a compelling personality. But what made a mark was her sense of purpose in life, as it resonated with him deeply.
Having distinct and rather demanding paths of their own helped them not only understand each other’s goals and priorities but also empathize with and support their fears and failures. Over 10 years of what was first a long-distance relationship and then a long-distance marriage, they nurtured a love that bloomed in not just the time they spent together, but also what they spent apart.
Ankita shares, “Often people who have careers as intensive as ours, believe they can either have success or love in life, but not both. I must admit I too believed for a long time that I would always place my work ahead of love, or anything else in life. Being with Lee showed me that the right person is always a source of strength, giving you the support and motivation you need to get through the rest of it. Whether it was the few days of vacation we spent together after months of being apart or the nights he stayed up just to help me study with flashcards, the constant flights he took to meet me because I couldn’t get away from work, and even in the times he silently understood my troubles and gave me space to figure them out, Lee made me feel loved and cherished no matter what. With him by my side, I have grown to have a more wholesome approach to life, one that prioritizes love and life just as much as work, and I feel grateful to him for helping me become my better self.”
She adds, “Lee has also been a beaming ray of sunshine in some of my darkest times, always helping me find the silver lining in every situation. In a world filled with naysayers, Lee made me realize how empowering it is to have someone be in your corner, always.”
Not one to ever be a step behind, Lee chimes in “It is one thing to stay positive and cheer someone on but to support them even when their choices make your own life difficult is not easy. My transition from military to civilian life marked a conflicting time, as I struggled to make a decision that would impact my professional and personal lives for years to come. With her calming presence, Ankita became my pillar, as I could always turn to and lean on her. Being a military spouse comes with many challenges of its own, the uncertainty, the constant transfers, and more, and Ankita’s unconditional support not only gave me comfort but also clarity about what I wanted from life. Knowing that she would always be there for me regardless of where I went or what I did, gave me the conviction to leave that route and do my MBA in pursuit of stability and a better future for both of us. The faith she showed in me then, laid the foundation for our marriage, as I realized I had found a true partner in her, one that loves and respects you through all the seasons in life, and I didn’t wait any longer to pop the question!”
