Harmit and Varun’s Platinum Love Story

Growing up, we often heard of epic love stories where one travelled “across the seven seas”, and marveled at the near-mythic power of such passion before dismissing it as “fiction”. However, the story of Harmit and Varun’s leap of faith and their unerring conviction in their love is a true testament to the belief that love does conquer all.
What started with a brazen public declaration of love for fun at a friend’s wedding transformed into a wholesome story of enduring commitment! San Francisco based marketing professional Harmit and Varun, who was a Director at a Software Company in Sydney first crossed paths at a wedding in Goa. In a classic Bollywood style meet-cute, the bride’s best friend and the groom’s best friend felt something brewing amidst the excitement of wedding revelries, which peaked at the Sangeet where Varun announced to the room that he would one day marry Harmit!
Varun shares, “It was bold and even cheesy, and not something I would normally ever do, but it caught her attention. As we got to know each other better over the next few days, I discovered a much deeper connection than the initial attraction. Her life experience and intellect fascinated me, and her ambitions and career goals felt completely in sync with mine. From the very beginning, I saw her as someone with whom I could build a life full of love, growth and support. Despite the fact that we were returning to cities half a world away, I knew we both felt something we did not want to give up, and started our long distance relationship. It was a tall order, but it was the start of something remarkable.
Looking back upon their initial months of long distance, Harmit shares, “I was constantly amazed by the commitment Varun showed to making our relationship work. He never let the 16-hour time difference between Sydney and San Francisco, or a busy work schedule get in the way of the moments we had together, and our bond only grew stronger with time. The biggest leap of faith, however, came 9 months into our relationship, when he took the momentous step to get transferred from Sydney to his San Francisco headquarters. The courage he showed, to take the necessary step and shift across the world to build a future with me, showed me I was with the right person. He was willing to make a change himself, in a world where even today only women are invariably expected to compromise, and that showed me that our relationship was one of true equality. He gave the same importance to my life and career as he did to his own, and that was an amazing foundation to build our future on.” Soon after, the couple moved in together, broke the news to their families, and tied the knot with pomp and splendor at Samode Palace, Jaipur.
The couple’s married life got off to an unexpected start, as the worldwide Pandemic and lockdown hit shortly after their wedding. Musing over the experience, Harmit shares, “Having spent so much time together before we got married, we were already attuned to each other’s presence from before, and spending even more time together only felt like a blessing. Having led very hectic professional lives up till now, we relished every moment of each other’s company at home. So, instead of focusing on all the things we had to give up this year, like our numerous travel plans, we welcomed each day with new tasks and challenges we could do together. From building DIY projects to doing a 10K run together, and even building towards pursuing our MBAs, every plan we took on helped us understand each other a little more.”
Being high-achieving professionals in their own fields, Harmit and Varun also talk about how important it is for both partners to equally support each other’s goals to grow and succeed in their careers. Varun reflects, “Any struggle to balance work and home life expectations automatically disappear when you have a partner who anticipates and supports your decisions. And more importantly, this understanding needs to extend both ways! Harmit and I understand all the expectations that come with our respective jobs, and never let that undermine our bond. In fact, being so grounded and secure in our relationship strengthens our outlook towards handling everything else, because we know we can always rely on each other for any help we might need.
