How to pick a Lipstick to match your Skin Tone

Every client I work on is anxious to know why I choose the products I do for them and which shades and colours are best for them. As a makeup artist, complexions, their undertones and suitable shades become a sixth sense after a while but I am here to help you understand your own complexion and how to pick the perfect lipstick for your skin tone.
The first thing to consider when picking a lipstick is what undertone your skin has.It can have a cool undertone, a warm undertone or a neutral undertone- everyone fits into one of the three. Those with cool skin tones tend to be fair with pinkish undertones and those with warm skin tones tend to be olive with yellow/golden undertones. Those with neutral skin tones can be from all parts of the spectrum with both cold and warm undertones.
A surefire way of confirming which category you fit into is by looking at the veins on the underside of your wrist. If your veins look blue, your skin has cool undertones. If your veins look green, your skin has warm undertones. If your veins look both blue and green, your skin has neutral undertones.
Cool colours with blue-purple undertones suit cool skin tones best especially when it comes to bold colours. Cool skin tones should avoid any lipstick too light in colour as it will wash out the complexion. Warm colours with red-orangey undertones suit warm skin tones best and deeper shades are most flattering and natural looking. As with cool skin tones, warm skin tones should also avoid any colour too light or pale in comparison to the natural lip colour. Those with neutral undertones are the luckiest of all; they can get away with almost any and every colour so experiment to your heart’s content!
