Kavya and Mehul’s Platinum Day of Love
Love Actually - Dec 19, 2019
Our initiative ‘Love Actually‘ is a photo series featuring engaged couples who actively seek ideas and inspiration from WeddingSutra. The series celebrates the beautiful people in love, as they start their lives together. Because real love can only begin, never end. Over coffee, a makeover and a photoshoot we get to-be-weds to tell us how they met, show us their platinum love bands and talk about their day of love.
How often do you find your soulmate who comes into your life out of the blue and sweeps you off your feet? This love story is about two Marwaris, who were complete strangers in the beginning but fell in love feeling they’ve known each other all their lives. Their relationship began with an arranged marriage setting following which they were bitten by the love bug.
Cupid got a little help from a meddling aunty who introduced Kavya and Mehul to each other, hoping for them to agree to an arranged marriage. Kavya, however, did not believe in the concept of an arranged marriage and had always wanted a fairytale romance. Moreover, having just finished her CSA exams, Kavya thought it was more important to explore her career options. Little did she know that fate had other plans.
After reluctantly agreeing to her father’s request to meet with Mehul (even if she were to reject him afterwards), Kavya was expecting a typical Marwari boy looking for a homemaker. But much to her surprise, Mehul turned out to be the complete opposite. She recalls her first meeting, and shares, “He was running late for dinner hosted at our aunt’s place. As soon as he entered the house with his sister, I saw him for the first time and was smitten. My cousin suggested we speak to each other alone, but both of us shied away from starting the conversation. Then, taking matters into his own hands, my cousin took Mehul & me out of the dining hall and broke the ice by introducing us. Ten minutes into the conversation, we realised that my cousin had already left the room! That’s how engrossed we were in our conversation. We spoke about our work, we shared stories from school & college, our ideas about marriage, our career goals that made me realise how liberal his thoughts were towards financially independent couples and how supportive he’d be to his future partner’s career aspirations. Just when we felt like the conversation had finally started flowing and the awkward tension had eased out, we were interrupted by our aunt and called in for dinner. That’s when we realised how comfortable we were around each other.”
“In that brief meeting, there was something that clicked, and I knew I wanted to know more about him. So, I told my dad and my aunt that even though I wasn’t agreeing on getting married just yet, I wanted to take this ahead on my terms. We arranged a date over lunch, but this time without families. We spent the entire day talking and didn’t run out of words for even a minute. It felt like two friends catching up after a long time.”
Speaking of one of their many following dates, Kavya recalls, “It was one of those days in Mumbai when the roads were flooded with rain. Mehul had booked the trendiest restaurant in BKC well in advance for our date. As usual, he reached after two long hours. To add to it, the place was noisy and full of people dancing, making it difficult for us to talk and have a conversation. Maybe Mehul sensed my discomfort, and saw me writing this off as the worst date possible, before I even knew it, he was leading me out of the place. I’m sure he must have been embarrassed by the whole situation, but what touched me was that he put that aside, prioritising my comfort instead. We ended up at a slightly more casual, low-key pizza joint instead.
Despite Kavya’s initial aversion towards an arranged marriage, she couldn’t help but fall in love with Mehul, and that too within a matter of weeks. She knew that this was it. She laughs at the thought and shares, “Even though I was sceptical about the whole arranged marriage scenario, I eventually learned to accept that, maybe it’s not about the way you’re meeting your soulmate that is important but the fact that they’ve come into your life that is important. That being said, I am hoping for Mehul to propose to me by getting down on one knee with a ring in his hand, like in the movies & fairytales, before we get married.”
How often does a chance meeting turn into a full-blown love story? So, when love comes knocking at your door when you least expect it, giving it just one tiny chance might lead to a rare connection as rare as Kavya and Mehul’s love story. The couple expressed their love through Platinum love bands – the significant symbol of love while proving that ‘better half’ doesn’t exist as they are each other’s ‘other half’.
As the couple celebrated their ‘Platinum Day of Love’ at the gorgeous locales of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali, the team at BrideMeUp By Chanderlata worked their magic to give Kavya a flawless makeover.
