Love Actually- Monica and Nikhil’s Platinum Day of Love
Love Actually, Precious Platinum - Jan 11, 2016
Our initiative ‘Love Actually’ is a photo series featuring couples who actively seek ideas and inspiration from WeddingSutra. The series celebrates beautiful people in love as they start their lives together: because real love can only begin, never end. Over coffee, a makeover and a photo shoot, couples tell us how they met, show us their platinum love bands and talk about their day of love.
Mumbaikars, Monica and Nikhil met at a summer internship eight years ago. Monica is Christian and Nikhil is of Sindhi and Maharashtrian parentage. They’re both MBAs, her specialization is in Marketing while his is HR.
Monica says, “We started talking and began going on long drives as we got to know each other better. I knew he liked me. But I wasn’t sure about my own feelings. A month into our friendship, we had a major accident on the Mumbai-Pune expressway. I suffered two spinal and an ankle dislocation. Nikhil had a ligament tear, a fracture and 19 pieces of glass embedded in his hand.
As we were taken to the hospital, he didn’t let go of my hand, even though he was bleeding profusely. Everyone told him, go, get your wounds dressed, but he refused to move. They forced him to get treatment but in a few minutes, he was back. That was the moment for me, as tears rolled down my eyes, I realized he was ‘The One’. Since then life has been a roller coaster with a few ups and downs for us, but we have stood together as one.”
“I’m the more expressive one,” she continues, “I’m always telling him I love him but I suspect he loves me more. Our bond has grown stronger over the years. You don’t really need to say the words ‘I Love You’ everyday. Like platinum, our relationship is not all about the glitter, but about being solid and everlasting.”
After eight years of them dating, Monica and Nikhil’s parents met and sealed the deal. They were engaged on the 25th of October, 2015. “It was a beautiful day,” Monica beams, “I couldn’t believe we were getting engaged and everything was so ‘grand’ just for us.”
They’re set to tie the knot this month; a church wedding on the 15th, a temple wedding on the 17th and a reception on the 18th. The couple have checked out venues, chosen their own wedding invitations, but by their own admission, Nikhil’s mother has been doing most of the running around.
Monica has a few tips for future brides and grooms, “So many things happen when you plan your wedding that no one tells you about. Like finding a better wedding outfit after you already bought yours! It can be quite surprising and you need to laugh it off. Then there’s the getting emotional about little things – a small proverb for your wedding card, the perfect ring you always wished for…Don’t stress over anything, whether good or bad. Take a deep breath and let it be. Also, delegate duties to siblings, cousins, friends… that way you can enjoy the planning process!”
If you’re getting married in 2016 and would like to be a part of ‘Love Actually’ write to us (editor@weddingsutra.com) with the link to your FB profiles, wedding date and ‘how you met’ story. Selected couples will be invited for the shoots in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai.
