Sudipti and Tom’s Platinum Day of Love

Our initiative, Love Actually, is a photo series that captures beautiful moments between couples in the most stunning locations across Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai. Here, Sudipti and Tom tell us of their inevitable friendship and their cross-cultural bond that created their ‘platinum’ love story.
“We were both pursuing our Masters degrees at Warwick University and it was in class that I first glanced at her,” Tom says. He didn’t have the courage to strike up a conversation with her but he was in luck, common friends introduced them. “We clicked instantly!” he says, “We started hanging out and really enjoyed each other’s company. In my heart I knew I was most comfortable with her and could already tell she was special.”
Their after-class chats graduated into unending phone calls and the two seemed inseparable. But Sudipti had to return to India after the completion of her course and that is when the two had to gear up for a long distance relationship. Tom says they considered getting engaged before, “I’d always thought of proposing to her with a platinum ring that would beautifully describe the permanence and inevitability of our relationship.”
They made sure they’d visit each other but a trip to Central Europe still remains the most memorable. “We both pretty much thought it was the last time we were ever going to see each other. It didn’t seem like we could continue our long distance relationship for long. I remember us sitting in Prague Airport, crying whilst waiting for our flights. I think it was that flight back that made me realize if I didn’t marry her I was going lose her for good,” Tom remembers.
Tom planned a proposal but it didn’t go as planned. He says, “I’m not the sort of person who enjoys public displays of affection, but I thought for Su I would come out of my comfort zone and propose at an ice skating rink during Christmas. When we got to the venue I was very tense and it was taking me a while to pick the right moment. Just as I was looking to pluck up the courage to do it, another guy proposed to his girlfriend right next to us! I panicked massively!” He ended up proposing at the side of the rink after almost everyone had left, but his sheer honesty and loveable nervousness earned him a ‘yes’. “To say Su wasn’t best pleased with my rushed proposal would be an understatement,” he grins, “We laugh about it now, but I will make up for it sooner.”
With the wedding around the corner, Tom is making sure Sudipti is not overburdened and stressed during the preparations. “Su is the right person to organize our wedding in India. She has a better understanding of Indian wedding venues and is ace at cracking a better deal than I am. I’m not entirely happy she has the entire thing to do on her own so I’m helping her delegate,” says the groom-to-be.
The Grecian-inspired Thalassa, in Bandra, Mumbai – with its blue and white walls and taverna feel – was the perfect backdrop for the couple to let their hair down and soak in the golden sun. “We loved the artistic vibe at Thalassa,” Tom enthuses, “Also I’m terrible with photos, so I was pretty awkward at the start but the photographer, Payal Kumar was really helpful in getting me to relax and feel less conscious. Everything from the outfits from Camessi to the jewellery was perfect. Makeup Artist Taniyaa Khanna created magic with her luminous makeup. And the platinum bands from Orra really made us feel special. We thought they were a perfect symbol of our relationship. In all, I was happy to do a beautiful pre-wedding shoot with Sudipti and cannot thank the team enough for such a brilliant opportunity.”
