This couple’s dream of a traditional wedding came to life after sixty four years!

In an era when love was seldom a choice but a path predetermined by tradition, Mrudula and Harshad took the less beaten path. Defying societal norms, they chose each other, sans any grand ceremony, elaborate celebrations, and familial blessings. They married quietly, bound only by their commitment to one another. Sixty-four years after their journey of love, partnership and commitment, the couple, surrounded by their family, took their pheras again in a stunning, heartfelt union planned, conceptualised and designed by WeddingSutra Favorite – Kankoo Thaapa.

Mrudula and Harshad’s dream of a wedding surrounded by their loved ones came true after sixty-four years of marriage. For this milestone celebration, the couple and their loved ones entrusted the reins to Kankoo Thaapa, who put their heart into every detail! Sagar Shah and Chandni Patel from Kankoo Thaapa shares, “Sixty-four years later, under the sacred reds of chandarva, surrounded by the family that had once been absent, Mrudula and Harshad finally experienced the wedding they had always longed for. Every ritual was not just a tradition but a reclamation of a moment they had been denied. The couple, who had once eloped in secrecy, relived the anticipation of marriage by spending the night apart before their wedding day. There were no barriers of age or marital status, only devotion and sincerity. Love has the power to rewrite customs, and this wedding was proof of that. For Mrudula, this wedding was a dream fulfilled. When she first married in the 1960s, her wedding attire was a simple ₹10 saree. This time, she adorned a beautiful saree, shimmering with the weight of long-awaited celebration. With jewelry adorning her and a veil gracefully draped over her, she stepped into the mandap, this time as a bride who was seen, celebrated, and honored.”

Sagar and Chandni from the planning team go on to share, “ When Harshad arrived with his baraat, he was welcomed with the same enthusiasm and joy that would have greeted him decades ago. This wedding was not an obligation of the elders but a heartfelt gift from the younger generation. The rituals were infused with love, where Grahshanti was not limited by conventions or relationships but performed with pure intentions, allowing grandchildren to pray for their grandparents’ well-being. The Kanyadaan, a ritual usually performed by parents, was instead conducted by those who had grown up listening to their love story – nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, offering their love and respect.
The celebration radiated warmth and unity. Guests sat together in pangat seating, sharing meals in an intimate setting that reinstated the values of equality and togetherness. The air resonated with laughter, the fragrance of fresh flowers, and the rhythm of music. Standing tall on all four sides of the Mandap, banana trees symbolize prosperity and an eternal bond. The decor featured an earthy palette with vibrant nadachhadi (Hindu sacred thread) red, terracotta and brass props, and a traditional toran at the entrance. The chandarvo (a hand-embroidered canopy with mirrors and motifs of prosperity and blessings) formed an exquisite chowri ceiling. Standing tall on all four sides of the wedding mandap, banana trees symbolized ‘Arth-dharm-kaam-moksh’. Terracotta pots wrapped in nadachhadi, filled with Rajnigandha flowers, symbolized unity, while Gharchola cushions and sacred motifs added ritualistic depth, making the celebration both intimate and profound. Every element here narrates a story of grace, of heritage, of love’s tender promise. A celebration of souls rejoicing in their married life, woven thoughtfully with tradition.”
Each material and design element was rich in its detail and quality. Clay pots filled with water were placed at the four corners in the traditional style, just as it was done in the olden days on the mandap. The Kankoo thaapa signature ‘paanch chanlla cushions with real zari gharchola cushions accentuated the decor. The design was a homage to the traditional Gujarati wedding but with a modern take for this bold love story.”
