From falling in love to tying the knot, Nupur and Ashwin’s bond was rooted in their love for nature. Ardent environmentalists, they decided to make their wedding a celebration of Mother Earth and incorporated no-waste and no-plastic elements while still staying true to their traditions. All the special moments of their festivities with a unique touch were captured by WeddingSutra Favorite – WhatKnot.
Ashwin Malwade, a chief officer in the merchant navy, and Nupur Agarwal, a marketing professional, met through common friends and bonded over a shared love of the environment at a beach clean-up initiative.
The couple’s mutual passion brought them closer and they soon made it a weekend ritual. Thanks to their mentor Afroz Shah, who sparked the nature consciousness in them, they have been actively working towards a better, cleaner environment for over three years, and decided to bring their efforts to their wedding planning as well by committing to minimal waste celebrations.
With the support of their family members and friends who helped them achieve this, they searched for sustainable catering, decor, outfits and travel options.
For their wedding destination, the couple chose Pune for its remarkably evolved recycling system. With most of their guests staying at neighboring OYO rooms, the festivities were hosted at Hotel Blue Diamond – IHCL SeleQtions.
The wedding decor was created with upcycled materials to minimize waste, and the flowers used were sent for composting the very next day. Since undesirable food wastage is one of the biggest drawbacks of weddings, food waste segregation was done stringently. Uttam Caterers were enlisted for their delectable food offerings, as well as their use of bagasse cutlery and dinnerware instead of plastic items.
To capture their moments for a lifetime, Nupur and Ashwin entrusted the team of WhatKnot. Nupur shares, “Ashwin had been following WhatKnot on Instagram and loved their candid shots alongside their deft skill of playing with lights and colors. They were a dream to work with, and with their non-intrusive style of shooting, they captured every moment perfectly while we enjoyed ourselves without interruption.”
Ditching the traditional baraat which involves a beautifully adorned horse, Ashwin chose to enter driving an electric car instead. The couple sought out completely handcrafted ensembles made from organic cotton for the nuptials. Ashwin’s rose-pink sherwani by Tisa Studio was embroidered with the hashtags #ClimateCrisis and #BeatPlasticPollution, while Nupur’s rich maroon lehenga was embroidered with #BeatPlasticPollution and #SavethePlanet.
To make up for the carbon emissions, in a thoughtful gesture, the couple decided to plant four trees on behalf of every guest that showed up at their wedding, starting with a couple of saplings they planted the day before their wedding.
