Vivanta by Taj- Surajkund a new venue for a Destination Wedding
Destination Weddings - Nov 4, 2013
We were invited by Vivanta by Taj to the launch of their new property in Surajkund. So when friends in Mumbai heard where we are, their next question was ‘where is Surajkund?’ Home to one of the biggest folk art fairs held every year in winter, Surajkund is less than a 45 minute drive from the Delhi airport. When you drive towards the hotel near Delhi’s Tughlaqabad Fort, you pass through a few green miles and reach the hotel nestled in the lap of forested and tranquil acres. The Taj Group recently took over the management of the hotel from the Suresh Nanda-owned Claridges Group (the hotel was earlier known as Claridges, Surajkund) and has positioned their new acquisition as an address for ‘urban renewals’. And an ideal place for a destination wedding.
The 287-room five-star hotel features a 22500 square feet conference & banqueting space, an 18500 square feet Jiva Grande Spa and a sun kissed courtyard with aqua bodies. Wedding Planners Raksha and Manoj Chawla of Delhi based Mansa Events tell us that many of their potential clients would be happy to explore getting married in this new oasis of calm. “Today, every second couple wants a Destination Wedding. However, it is not considered as a practical option by some families. Vivanta by Taj- Surajkund scores on the accessibility factor. So you travel to a wedding in Delhi itself, and when you’re here you don’t feel you’re in Delhi.” That the property is managed by the Taj Group is the other big plus, emphasize Raksha and Manoj. At present, the banquet hall and courtyard are two venue options within the property, but since many wedding clients prefer green outdoor venues to indoor venues, the Hotel’s General Manager informs us that they can facilitate with organizing one or two functions, at the large outdoor spaces, next to the hotel. So as is usually the trend in Destination Weddings, each of the different functions are held at different spaces.
Vivanta in keeping with its philosophy of providing guests ‘imaginative experiences’ has worked on several new initiatives at the property- the Jiva Spa offers tailor-made experiences for weddings and the ‘Nuptial Suite’ is curated by well-known haute and young designer- Little Shilpa. And to delight the Spa lovers, there are two suites, the Jiva Bliss suite and the Jiva Indulgence room to take the Spa experience right into the rooms.
For the morning and evening celebrations to mark the launch, Vivanta by Taj invited young Delhi designer Nida Mahmood to design the décor. Nida worked on ‘sun’, ‘light’ and ‘relationships’ as the inspiration for the décor. Explains Nida: “The idea was to keep it ornate, yet refreshing with out-of-the-box-elements. For the morning ‘Mehndi’, we used lots of yellows and white, instead of greens. For the evening ‘Sangeet’ the look was rich with basic elements like glass bottles and yellow light bulbs” Many guests asked Nida about the ‘Kettle’ which was part of the décor. “The kettle was the ‘sweet’ element, to signify the morning after, the start of a beautiful journey and dawn of a beautiful relationship.”
