Wedding Venues across Great Britain
Destination Weddings - Apr 5, 2017
If you’re looking for a destination wedding venue with personality, Great Britain is a treasure trove of quirky, gorgeous, unique surprises. On a hill or in a cave, on a ship or in a castle or even center stage at an ancient theatre – take your pick!
In a Scottish castle
In the care of Historic Environment Scotland, the country’s major heritage attractions provide stunning vistas, impressive architecture and interesting history to any wedding. Choose the ancient ruins of Urguhart Castle on the shores of the famous Loch Ness or walk in the footsteps of Mary Queen of Scots at the impressive Stirling Castle or get married at the international landmark that is Edinburgh Castle.
At the home of the Royal Family
Kensington Palace in London, inhabited by the British royal family since the 17th century, is currently the home of Prince William, his wife Kate, their adorable cherubs George and Charlotte and William’s brother, Prince Harry! Wow everyone when you have your ceremony at The Orangery and then choose between the palace gardens or a range of indoor spaces for your grand reception!
At sunset or sunrise at the Roman Baths
Imagine standing on paving that goes back two millennia as you say ‘I do’ for eternity. The Roman Baths are at the heart of the City of Bath World Heritage Site. Bath, in the south-west of England, is a gorgeous town and the site itself is a wonder. Flowing with hot water from the thermal springs, the site is spectacular by the light of dawn and dusk and you can get married with the steam rising into dreamy clouds around you.
On a football pitch
Footie fan? This one’s for you. Most of Britain’s major football teams offer their own stadiums for wedding packages. If you’re a fan of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Leicester – the 2015-16 winners of the Premier League – you can avail of their clubs’ function rooms overlooking the pitches. Some clubs also offer pitch-side photography. Now that’s a goal!
On a Shakespearean stage
“They do not love that do not show their love,” said William Shakespeare more than 400 years ago but the words still hold true. Arguably the world’s most famous playwright, brides and grooms who want to proclaim their love to the world can get married, on stage at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, the beloved bard’s place of birth.
In a cave
The ancient caves of Wookey Hole in Somerset contain some of the most beautiful rock formations in Britain. Stunning and mysterious, surrounded by clear pools that sparkle by candlelight, you can exchange your vows deep in the heart of the good earth in any one of the three spectacular wonders that are the cave chambers.
Up a mountain
Marriages are made in heaven but you can choose Britain’s highest restaurant and function venue to tie that knot. There is no experience as unique as a wedding on Cairngorm Mountain in beautiful Scotland. Nestled in the Cairngorms National Park, guests can board a mountain railway for a thrilling ride up to Ptarmigan Lodge – 1097 meters above sea level for spectacular views of lochs and mountains.
On a historic ship
Once the world’s largest passenger ship, the SS Great Britain was built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel – the country’s famed engineering genius. This iconic craft was the first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic in the year 1845! Today, she is docked placidly in Bristol’s historic harbour, the Great Western Dockyard where she was once built. Bristol is a wonderful, thrilling city and after the wedding on the deck of the ship, guests will love a ramble through the town.
In a cliffside temple
This distinctive building, formerly a summer library, was inspired by the incredible Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Rome. Over the years, erosion of the cliff has brought Mussenden Temple even closer to the edge affording even better views! Don’t worry though – the National Trust carried out a comprehensive cliff stabilization so the temple is secure. If you fancy getting married in a gorgeous structure, built in 1785, with views of the Atlantic Ocean and the rambling countryside – this is the place for you.
