When Indian weddings went up in the air; how Mumbai’s Popleys orchestrated an on-air extravaganza
Wedding Planning - May 25, 2021
The wedding of Rakesh and Dakshina from Madurai made headlines recently– when their families chartered a Spice Jet aircraft and invited 130 guests to witness the on-air nuptials while the jet hovered around the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai. While some folks marvelled at the family’s ‘jugaad’ some were aghast that something like this could happen and how. This uproar has obviously resulted in the authorities calling for an enquiry, though the nature of the act makes it difficult to pin-point who all are at fault– the bride and groom? their families? the airline management? the ground staff? the pilots? or the crew?
While the authorities go on an inquiry to decide who needs to be punished or fined, what we’re going to tell is something some of you may be aware of– long before the Madurai wedding made news, Indians have been dazzling the world with their penchant for weddings up in the air or on the high seas. Laxman Popley from the famous Popley Jewellers Family made news back in 1994 when he chartered an Air India flight for his son’s wedding. The first of its kind in India, the on-air wedding happened across a 2-hour journey from Mumbai to Ahmedabad and highlights included a fire-less ceremony and a 3-tier wedding cake designed by celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor.

An on-air wedding may not be witnessed for quite some time (or it just maybe if some countries/ airlines put strict regulations for its conduct in place) and cruise weddings may take some time to be back; till then let weddings be held as per stringent safeguards in a way that doesn’t make the couple or the families feel there is less ‘pomp’ but with an awareness that this is the best (or safest) that can be done today.
