Devika Sakhuja takes us through her journey so far and shares her take on the future trends that will shape the industry.
1. Can you walk us through how your wedding decor designing has evolved from a thought to a company?
“When I was getting married, we looked for and researched a lot of designers and planners to help us with the entire wedding process. That is when I identified that there was a gap in the kind of quality that couples wanted and what was being offered. I realized that there were only a few people who could actually execute weddings professionally and fulfill the client’s dream of a perfect wedding, despite there being a high demand for them. That is when I decided to form this company and bring to life couples’ visions of their dream weddings. The idea was to translate their dreams into reality and I went about doing so in a very structured and professional manner. It was clear to me that organization and efficiency were the keys to setting a sound foundation in this field. Embracing this approach in our operations helped us immensely in establishing this company.”
2. You are known for your magnificent decor at weddings that includes cultural heritage and quirky modern-day aesthetics. How do you manage to bring the best of both worlds together?
“At Devika Sakhuja Designs, we believe in creating versatile decor and don’t like to stick to a particular style. This is what allows us to create concepts and designs that are not only culturally rich but also reflective of the aesthetic sense of a modern couple. We identify traditional designs and our team knows just how to bring in the right amount of freshness to these classic themes, without taking away from their essence.”
3. You ace each wedding with much finesse. To have each wedding stand out in terms of uniqueness can be challenging, how do you manage to achieve this?
“A wedding is one of the most special occasions in a couple’s life and we feel greatly honored each time we are entrusted with the responsibility of creating magic on these special days. We are driven by a passion to bring new ideas to the table and execute each affair as immaculately as possible. Therefore, in order to be able to devote a fair amount of time on every project, we take on a limited number of weddings in a year. This gives us enough room for ideation and ensuring that each event is a stand-out affair that mixes our style with our client’s tastes and personality.”
4. Sanjana Batra’s wedding was a dreamy affair that brides-to-be have definitely bookmarked. Were there any eureka moments or challenging moments while ideating for this wedding?
“It is quite interesting how we started off with Sanjana’s wedding. We were traveling to Srinagar for an event when we received a call from her. It was just four weeks to her wedding when we took on this project and it was amazing working with her and her family. They have a very strong sense of design and aesthetic. Luckily for us, our tastes were an instant match. This made the whole experience very smooth and pleasurable. Piecing everything together in such a short time span was a challenge, but what made everything worthwhile was her parents’ reaction. The moment they walked into the sangeet, they said, ‘Devika, you and your team have surpassed all our expectations’!”
5. What is a mantra you follow as a wedding decor designer?
“To never compromise on our quality while managing cost-effectiveness at the same time. Our constant endeavor remains to give clients more that their money’s worth. It’s a challenge that only leaves us more stimulated.”
6. What is a wedding decor trend waiting to go big?
“‘Less is more’ is definitely the next big trend. The popularity of grand decor and bulky structures is on a decline as couples today are opting for a more minimalistic route.”
