Ivy Getty and Tobias Alexander Engel

The artist model and oil heiress dazzled in a John Galliano wedding dress custom made with mirrors and a 16-feet long train that took over 200 hours to make.

Replete with high fashion, inspiring decor, fabulous revelries, and an astonishing guest list, Ivy Love Getty’s fantasy wedding weekend in San Francisco was glamor galore. The artist, model, and heiress to J. Paul Getty’s oil fortune tied the knot with her photographer beau Tobias Alexander Engel at City Hall in San Francisco in a stunning ceremony officiated by none other than the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Queen’s Gambit star Anna Taylor Joy was the bride’s maid-of-honor. The couple first met through a family member while at Paris Fashion Week and the groom popped the question to her during a trip to Capri over an intimate meal with a Sapphire ring set with the bride’s Grandma’s diamonds on a gold band, reminiscent of Princess Diana’s wedding ring.

The bride honored her late grandmother Ann, the notable interior designer and philanthropist, by hosting the wedding festivities at her incredible San Francisco House, widely acknowledged as one of the great treasure houses of America. The stunning architecture and interiors made for picturesque backdrops to the celebrations, while some of the art panels of the house even made it into the save-the-dates and invitations.

The wedding kicked off with a British Invasion Mod Party at The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco on Thursday night, the decor of which was inspired by Barberella, the 1968 sci-fi film transforming what normally feels like an airline hanger inside into a full-fledged nightclub, complete with shiny silver walls. The couple and their guests dressed for the theme party, in short, sexy sequins, gogo boots, and big half up, half down hair while professional dancers put on a show in clear plastic bubbles and Mark Ronson DJed leading to the performance by Earth Wind & Fire took the stage. Ivy sported not one but three looks for the evening.

The next day began with a picnic lunch at the Log Cabin on Presidio, overlooking the city. Sentimental to Ivy, butterflies were incorporated into the decor. Ivy embodied romance with an edge in a stunning black lace archive Alexander McQueen gown hand-embroidered with dozens of butterflies. A ceremony rehearsal at City Hall in the evening was followed by an intimate dinner at Quince restaurant, for which Ivy wore a sequin midi dress in shades of fuchsia, black, and white, paired with a custom headpiece, designed by Paul Burgo.

The wedding day started with a pajama party for the bride and her squad of 14 bridesmaids. The legendary designer John Galliano designed the bride’s iconic bridal gown as well as each of the bridesmaids’ dresses that were custom made for everyone in delicate shades of grays and lilacs. Ivy paired her couture mirror-work dress with a 16-foot veil hand-embroidered with sentimental motifs, an avant-garde headdress, pieces from her grandmother’s jewelry collection, and custom Christian Louboutin pumps designed in collaboration with John Galliano. The entire rotunda of City Hall was transformed with bright teal and pink Persian rugs, velvet drapes with 12” long gold thread fringe, thousands of pale pink dendrobium orchids, large urns of pastel roses, and more, a nod to Ann Getty’s aesthetics. The adorable flower girls were dressed as butterflies, and the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi officiated the ceremony. Music composed by the bride’s late father Gordon Getty was performed, while best man Frederic Trohler and Ivy’s rescue Chihuahua mix, Blue played ring bearers. Queue Myra, the singer known for her hit in The Princess Diaries played “Miracles Happen” from the balcony.

A rose garden was erected at Getty Mansion for the Reception dinner and DJ Dance Party. The bride changed into a second look for the occasion. Toasts, cake cutting, and a whole lot of dancing followed.
