Geethika Haridas and Siddhanth Jayaram, Amita Rasa, Karnataka
This couple embraced sustainability with a sangeet with ‘light only’ decor, electric cars and minimal wastage.
Geethika Haridas and climate entrepreneur Siddhanth Jayaram’s wedding was an intricately curated celebration where heritage, sustainability and modern trends were effortlessly woven together. Planned and designed by WeddingSutra Favorite – To The Aisle, this union showcased the couple’s journey while paying homage to their roots.
Wedding Planning
Equipped with a clear vision of how their wedding celebrations should unfold, bride Geethika’s brief to the planning team revolved around three tenets – sustainability, authenticity and individuality. Geethika shares, “We wanted to ensure sustainability in planning all aspects of the wedding – both large and small (our sustainability philosophy is small enough to do but big enough to matter!). Sustainability was very important for Siddhanth, who has been working deeply in the climate space for the last 3 years. Some ways in which we tried to make sustainable choices at our wedding – the ‘light only’ décor for our Sangeet, electric cars to ferry guests across venues, and minimal food wastage.
Next in line was our commitment to being authentic to our roots. Siddhanth is Kannadiga while I am a Keralite. Hence, we tried to fuse equal parts of our heritage into the celebration. The engagement ceremony was a true reflection of this thought process with traditional kaikottikali dancers from Kerala, Siddhanth’s family dressed in Ikat attire, my family dressed in mundu-veshti attire and handpicked dishes from Malabar and north Karnataka being served. The wedding ceremony was authentic and traditional fused with Kerala and Tamil rituals. At the same time, we also wanted to tell all our guests more about us and what brought us together. For the Mehendi, the theme was tropical to reflect our favourite vacation spots, the food was Asian, a cuisine that we both enjoy and that we first bonded over.”
Orchestrating and designing the wedding was To The Aisle who with their precise understanding of the couple’s vision ensured the celebrations went ahead without a hiccup. Curating each detail perfectly while focusing on sustainability and keeping the couple’s unique style intact – the planning team knocked it out of the park at each event!
Wedding Functions
Engagement
The wedding festivities commenced with an engagement ceremony that consisted of Nishcitartham and Aiynoon rituals. Niishcitartham is a Telugu ceremony where the bride and groom exchange rings in the presence of their families. This ritual is also considered as an official announcement of the upcoming nuptials. Aiyoon, on the other hand, is a Keralite ritual of serving sacred lunch at the bride and groom’s homes after being blessed by their elders. The decor for both these occasions, which were fused seamlessly together was kept simple with red and white florals. Culinary delights from Malabar and northern Karnataka were served to the guests.
Mehndi
Quirky, earthy, vivid and an apt expression of the couple’s journey – the mehndi was hosted by the hillside. The tropical decor echoed the couple’s beloved vacation spots while the Asian cuisine, a favourite of the duo, had the guests reaching for second helpings. Hues of bright pink, earthy brown, green, purple and red struck a stunning contrast with the clear blue sky.
Sangeet
Geethika shares, “The sangeet was themed as ‘A Sky Full of Stars’ – our nod to Coldplay which is one of our favorite bands. The decor was inspired by traditional step wells that were often spaces for religious and social gatherings of the 11th century, the amphitheatre named ‘Kalyani’, was the venue. The decor only consisted of lights through which we infused a modern flair by incorporating layers of futuristic lighting.
Wedding
As the father of the groom hails from Tamil Nadu, the wedding predominantly followed the Tamil style, with elements from Malayali traditions incorporated. While the ceremonies were authentic and traditional, the décor infused Japanese Origami art with florals giving a global, modern twist to the conventional wedding mandap.
Cocktail
A fun ceremony with sleek decor, the cocktail celebrated the couple’s union with cold pyros, groovy beats and endless drinks. Toasts were raised and soulful music was played as the couple embarked on a new adventure.
