Varun and Silpa, Nusa Dua, Bali
Varun and Silpa's wedding decor was inspired by Balinese culture and their focus was on ensuring that everyone, including themselves, had a relaxing yet fun time.
They may have met in an arranged marriage setup, but Silpa and Varun prefer to describe it as an ‘assisted’ setup! Their relationship took off after their first meeting and the couple tied the knot in the island of Bali. Capturing all the moments of the beautiful three-day celebrations was WeddingSutra Favorite – House on the Clouds. Here, bride Silpa shares highlights and tips on ensuring how couples can plan a memorable wedding without the stress.
How We Met
“Varun and I met on February 15th, 2018, because meeting on Valentine’s Day would have been too much pressure. It was technically ‘arranged,’ but we like to call it ‘assisted.’ We dated for a couple of months, and then Varun popped the question with a ring that was five sizes too big! The best part about all this was that we decided to keep it a secret for a while before telling our families.”
Wedding Venue
“We decided to get married at The Ritz-Carlton in Nusa Dua, Bali, because there truly is something magical and peaceful about the island. Incidentally, those two adjectives are what I used to even describe Varun after a month of getting to know each other which is why marrying him there made even more sense!”
Wedding Planning
“The wedding came together flawlessly because of the tireless efforts of all the teams that worked with us and my powerhouse of a mother. Our wedding was planned by Purple Tree Event Solutions who worked in tandem with the team at Innaz Communique to put together a remarkable celebration. The functions were photographed by Terralogical while the videography was taken care of by House On The Clouds. Atelier Five was in charge of designing the prettiest wedding invitations, and my makeup artist was Namrata Soni who is an expert in her field. A few people who deserve a special shout out are my aunts, grandmothers, and my great grandmother for their endless support. The overall vibe at all the functions including the wedding was very casual and breezy since we didn’t want our friends to stress out too much about clothing and accessories. We wanted to make sure everyone had an incredible time after taking the effort to fly to Bali from all over the world. Most people assume that the bride and groom never really enjoy their wedding because of how hectic things can get, but that couldn’t be any further from the reality of our wedding.”
Wedding Functions
Sundowner
“A relaxing sundowner kicked off our wedding celebrations. An all-white decor theme with lots of lights and lanterns added a chic edge, and the ambiance allowed our guests to relax and get into the wedding spirit. The performances by Hari and Sukhmani was an absolute hit! I wore a Tarun Tahiliani ensemble while Varun went with an outfit by Sabyasachi Mukherjee.”
Haldi
“My favorite event was our combined casual haldi ceremony that took place on the morning of the sangeet. We had friends and family come over to my villa for breakfast and a friendly water fight ensued to wash off the sandalwood and turmeric paste. A lot of them plunged into the pool and pushed Varun and me in as well! All of us had a blast at this ceremony.”
Sangeet
“For the sangeet, we wanted to give our loved ones a taste of Balinese art and culture which we did by creating decor that resembled the traditional architecture style of the island. Our stage was the most striking element of the setup and was made to look like the Gates of Heaven at Pura Lempuyang temple.”
Wedding
“While our wedding ceremony was very traditional, our setup once again was inspired by Bali. Lots of auspicious penjors (curved bamboo poles) surrounded the venue and the mandap which was evocative of Balinese architecture. Varun even entered the venue with locals who were dressed in traditional Balinese attire. I wore a Gaurang zari and tissue saree, and Varun opted for a sherwani and dhoti combination from Shantanu & Nikhil.”
Reception
“The aesthetic for our reception was contemporary and classy with floral centerpieces on every table. This function made for the perfect opportunity for us to thank our loved ones for being present on our big day. Varun wore a custom suit from Diwan Saheb, and I wore a Reena Bajaj sequined saree.”
Advice for Couples
“Our only advice for couples getting married is to make sure you hydrate. Hydration is key. For everything else, you’ve got your family and friends.”
