Poorva and Jasper, Fortune Park Boulevard Chattarpur, Delhi
You know it's truly a cross-cultural wedding when the bride's Indian family members participate in a baraat to guide the Dutch groom on what to do! Check out Jasper and Poorva's wedding highlights that unfolded in New Delhi.
Their love story may have taken them to different parts of the globe, but both Poorva and Jasper chose Amsterdam and New Delhi for their dual wedding ceremonies that captured the beauty of both their backgrounds. Bride Poorva describes all the special moments that took place as two families and cultures came together.
How we met
“I moved to Amsterdam from New Delhi eight years ago for my Master’s Degree and then found a job I liked as well as a man I loved. Working for the same company, our paths never crossed for three years until some common friends/colleagues invited Jasper and me to the same dinner. As they say, there’s a right time for everything; I guess it was then for us. Dating a colleague is always a different ballgame. We were both unsure if we wanted to date someone at work. We started having just coffees at work, but when you notice those coffees are happening before and after work and every day, you know you aren’t just colleagues anymore. That’s when we finally went for our first official date two months later! Soon after, he got an opportunity to work in Singapore, and I couldn’t have been the person against it. We just decided to see how it goes, and after two years of a long-distance relationship, we finally tied the knot.”
Proposal
“Right before moving back to Amsterdam, Jasper visited my parents in New Delhi alone and asked for my hand in Hindi! I only got to see the video six months later when he proposed to me! I always knew it would never be a flash mob kind of a proposal with him. It was a very private affair which took place at a point on the other side of Amsterdam from where we could see all the main places that were special to us – the place we first met, the place where we were going to move-in, and the place where we had our first date.”
Wedding Venue
“For our Dutch vows and celebration, it was a very intimate affair at The Grand in Amsterdam with a high tea at the private balcony. For the Indian one, we did online research and fell in love with the trees at the Banyan Courtyard at Fortune Park Boulevard in Chattarpur. We wanted to have the whole place to ourselves so that everyone could stay there as well. The food, the service, everything there was amazing!”
Wedding Functions
Mehndi
“The mehndi was a day event, and the courtyard where we hosted the event was so beautiful that we chose curated decor elements that accentuated the greenery and the trees – colors, tassels, flowers! The theme for the event was bright and colorful, and we incorporated lots of bright pink and orange accents into the decor.”
Sangeet
“We held the sangeet the same day in the evening by the poolside to do justice to the Indo-Western theme. The decor was very modern with a Gatsby-inspired vibe and included fairy lights and beautiful lanterns on the impressive tree in the center. The event kicked off with a beautiful speech by my little brother and a toast from Jasper’s dad. We performed a tango on ‘Por Una Cabeza,’ and he prepared a video for me from future Jasper about future us. It was funny, beautiful and a total surprise! It was an evening filled with bad dance moves, good music, flowing alcohol and a whole lot of laughter. My outfit was an off-white Indianized gown which I paired with a heavy necklace and smokey eyes.”
Haldi
“We hosted the ‘churra’ ceremony first, followed by the haldi for both of us. It was probably the most awaited part of the wedding for many just so that they could paint us yellow. Jasper’s mom even lined up twice! The ceremony was an intimate affair with close family and friends in attendance. A simple yet colorful setup was created at the venue with fun decor elements.”
Wedding
“We had an early baraat and early pheras. Jasper nailed the Indian groom look, and even my family participated in the baraat to show them how to do it right! I entered on ‘Din Shagna Da’ (there was no second choice!), and I could see my mom completely breaking down and Jasper becoming teary-eyed. After the intimate ceremony, we replicated the sangeet just with more people and different clothes. For this day, I went for the traditional red. I never wore red on someone else’s wedding, so this was my turn! I accidentally stumbled upon the beautiful red lehenga from One Pretty Girl. It was a beautiful bridal ensemble but not super heavy and just perfect for dancing after the ceremony.”
Advice for Couples
“Don’t stress about the little details, it is your wedding so enjoy it! Do what you want – drink, dance, eat! Make time for each other during the wedding days. Also, don’t underestimate your mom’s nearby boutique and contacts; you might need them for the last minute things.”
