Abhishek and Alivia, who have made Bangalore their home, tied the knot in a traditional Bengali style wedding in their hometown Kolkata. They were looking for gorgeous landscapes for their honeymoon and shortlisted this beautiful country and its beautiful islands for their romantic getaway. Here Alivia shares some highlights from their travels.
Honeymoon Planning
“We are both travel buffs and Europe had always been on top of our wish list. We wanted to keep things relaxed and romantic and hence decided on doing a single country. We finalized on the slightly offbeat but exquisite country of Greece because of its rich history and amazing beauty of the Aegean islands, not to mention the crazy parties that one hears about in Mykonos. We planned everything ourselves as we wanted to spend time at our leisure and visit places without the rushed itinerary of a packaged trip.”
Honeymoon Highlights
“Athens was our first stop and the walk up to the Acropolis during late afternoon was really special. The Acropolis and the Parthenon gave us goosebumps as we reminisced about the times when we would read about it in our history books. We stayed at the Metropolis Hotel in Athens which was right in the middle of Plaka with an amazing view of the Acropolis from the rooftop.”

In Santorini, the Red Beach was a visual treat and the small trek to the beach was quite an adventure. Oia was the most picturesque part of Santorini and the sunset from the top was one to behold. While in Santorini, we stayed at the beautiful Galatia Villas in Santorini which was very close to the main market square in Fira and had a lovely Jacuzzi. Paros was ideal to just sit back and relax and enjoy the beauty of the Aegean Sea as we spent an entire evening chatting with the local folks and listening to their stories at one of the many quaint cafes by the sea. We stayed at the Nostos Studios that was beautifully decorated with traditional Greek styled rooms and our host Dina was super welcoming and courteous. With-inn in Mykonos was the best hotel of the lot, with an amazing view of the Aegean Sea from our balcony. This island was truly the land of party animals as we had expected it to be and of course we danced all night and had a good time at the Tropicana Bar.”

“Both of us are absolute foodies, so we decided that we would try all sorts of traditional cuisine during our trip. We had some of the most amazing Greek food so it’s difficult to pin point one meal. But if I had to choose a few, I would choose the lavish buffet spread on board during our cruise to Hydra island, the amazing Gyros from Yogi’s Gyro in Fira while at Santorini and the seafood including cuttlefish and squid in Siparos near Santa Maria beach in Paros.”
Most Romantic moment
“The drive around Paros along scenic roads was one of the most romantic moments. We took a little halt in the middle of nowhere right by the sea and spent some time on the serene beach as the cold water touched our feet. Also the breakfast we had in Fira Santorini on a beautiful morning looking right across the volcano and the clear blue Aegean Sea was one of the highlights of the trip.”
Must Experience
“Santorini is definitely a must go. It feels truly out of a dream with the setting of white and blue houses against the backdrop of the Aegean Sea. I would also recommend visiting the island of Paros as it gives a true feel of Greek culture with its quaint ports and beautiful pebbled maze of streets.”
