Satya Paul and Manish Malhotra Show in South Africa

Leading designers Satya Paul and Manish Malhotra brought indian fashion to South Africa with their latest collections at the India Show. Manish Malhotra’s collection titled ‘Celebrations’ was inspired by various eras from the Mughal period to the Rajasthan royalty to contemporary bridal wear. Set in jewel tones and luxurious fabrics like velvets, antique brocades, the collection amalgamates traditional zardosi and thread work with saris, anarkalis, shararas and interpretations of these classics. What can we say, the collection was lustworthy.

Satya Paul’s collection “Zen, Zest, Zip, Zap and Zing” , on the other hand, was, hmm, interesting with plenty of prints and embroidered textures.

Except for these monstrosities! How did these “things” get on the ramp?

A few weeks ago, Mehul Choksi, Chairman of Gitanjali Group in an interview to WeddingSutra had announced his daughter Priyanka’s marriage to Antwerp-based Akash Mehta. His to-be-wed daughter is in the news again, she has just launched her own entrepreneurial venture. Priyanka, has brought to India A.Jaffe, New York’s most sought-after luxury bridal brand and one of America’s oldest bridal jewellery manufacturers. Priyanka herself wears an A.Jaffe engagement ring. What else is the privileged princess picking for her trousseau? “All my wedding wear will be designed by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. For jewellery shopping I’m planning to visit Delhi, Kolkata, Jaipur and Hyderabad.” She adds: “I’m an accessory freak too—Malaga clutches are my favorite, and the other accessory brands I usually pick when travelling abroad are Chloe, Chanel, Fendi and Jimmy Choo.” And where does she plan to take her fiance for his wedding shopping? “His wear for the different functions may be a mix from different designers– Abu-Sandeep, Raghuvendra Rathore and Krishna Mehta”, she says.

Priyanka and Akash’s wedding is in Jodhpur in December this year.

The white embellished sarees on these gorgeous ladies gets a yay from us!

More white done right! Gets another yay.

Ayesha’s lehenga is a bit too dressy, Mugdha’s make-up is a bit off, but they still come off looking good.

Couldn’t resist but share these fashion faux pas!

Rani dons a beautiful anarkali ensemble from Sabyasachi. Love the color and she looks gorgeous.

There is no excuse for walking into a wedding event dressed casually. Ladies, keep a change in the car if you are too busy to go home and change.

Wish we had full length photos of these lovelies. That maangtikka is so sweet.

Amrapali Glams up the Jewellery Week

After spotting gorgeous jewellery pieces on Bollywood’s leading ladies at the India International Jewellery Week, we were full of anticipation when we heard that Amrapali is showing. We are glad to report that we were not disappointed. Neither were the many female celebrities who turned up to watch the show. We spotted Ila Arun and her daughter Isshita Arun, actress Kiron Kher, Alka Yagnik, Anita Dongre, Neena Gupta and her fashion designer daughter Masaba.  The very beautiful Konkana Sen Sharma opened the Amrapali show wearing a five-row kundan neck piece, armlet, bangles, earrings and a choker.

So which of these jewellery pieces is your favorite?

Designer duo Amrita Thakur and Gaurav Khanijo’s Stunning Wedding Photos

Amrita Thakur and Gaurav Khanijo got married at The Leela, Gurgaon in June this year. Amrita was Gaurav’s junior at the Pearl Academy of Fashion, Delhi where they both studied fashion designing. They reconnected a few years later, when Amrita was working at The Ensemble in Mumbai. Post marriage, Amrita has shifted from Mumbai to Gaurav’s home town Delhi and the newly-wed couple are launching a fashion label for Indian and Western evening wear. Amrita’s sister Divya Thakur, runs Design Temple, one of the most successful graphic design studios in India.

Since Amrita worked with The Ensemble shopping for wedding wear was easy yet difficult. She explains: “I was aware of which designer designs great stuff, but I also knew what costs how much; I didn’t want to over-pay and I had a hard time saying no to what I felt were gorgeous yet over-priced garments.” Because she had a clear idea about what she wanted she didn’t get too influenced by multiple fashion opinions: “One of the comments I hate hearing is—’but everyone is wearing this’. I was very clear that I didn’t want to wear what everyone wore. I also did my own make-up for all the functions, and only hired a hairstylist to help with hairstyling.”

Amrita wore a chic Anamika Khanna saree with a sleeveless blouse for the engagement and a mustard/ pink saree by the same designer for the sagan function. A self-designed green long kurta for the sangeet, a velvet lehenga by Sabysachi for the pheras, a Manish Malhotra lehenga for the reception and a Karen Millen cocktail dress for an evening party. Most of Gaurav’s wedding wear was designed by himself and his friend Divyam Mehta. For the reception he wore a E Zegna suit. What caught everyone’s attention was the dapper Nehru Jacket with pleated Dhoti pants that he wore for the evening party.

Katrina and Deepika walk the runway for Jewellery Show

Bollywood brought the necessary glamour to The India International Jewellery Week with Katrina Kaif walking for Nakshatra diamonds in a lace lehenga by Neeta Lulla and Deepika Padukone for Farah Khan Ali in a beige Ana Singh Saree.

While we love Katrina’s diamond necklace, not digging the lehenga.  While Deepika looks gogeous, something about her choli makes makes the whole ensemble unflattering on her body. What to do you say about the two lovely ladies? Dig their look, or on the fence like us?

Garas: Prized Possessions

Old and new garas enjoy equal popularity at social occasions.

The book, “Peonies & Pagodas: Embroidered Parsi Textiles” details the history of Gara embroidered creations and talks about new trends in Gara embroideries. Garments with Gara embroidery once produced by Chinese weavers and embroiderers, became a distinctive mark of the community’s identity in India. The book traces how Parsi women came to adopt Chinese-style Gara embroideries as an image statement, reflecting their prosperity from trade with the East. Prior to that, Parsis settled on the West Coast typically wore clothing with embroidery on saris and jhablas in the Gujarati style. Interestingly, their appeal for the Chinese embroideries was an outcome of their desire to follow British trends: ‘chinoiserie’ and ‘orientalist’ wave had swept London fashions. In trickled the exotic Garas brought by male family members stationed in China. Gradually, the gara became a signifier of social status and good taste.

In the chapter “The Gara Today: An Heirloom Reinvented”, the authors state: “Today Gara embroidered creations are treasured as heirlooms worn on special occasions like Weddings and preserved to be passed on to the next generation. Some entrepreneurs and designers produce lots of sarees with traditional Gara embroidery or are fashioning a modern look for it—in Mumbai Farzeen Daver Boomla, Rayomand Manekshaw, Perveez Aggarwal, in Delhi Bina Modi and in Kolkata Prastuti Creations. Some are incorporating innovations like the application of Swarovski crystals, sequins and spangles, seed pearls and beads on Chinese-inspired designs. The use of zari thread lends an additional element of richness, thus broadening the Garas’ overall appeal. Some even provide economical versions that are machine-embroidered on both silk and synthetics”.

Though few prominent Indian designers use Garas, the ones who use it have adapted and spiffed up the original style to meet the changing tastes of fashionable, modern women just like it did in the past. Co-edited by Shilpa Shah and Tulsi Vatsal the book will be appreciated by textile enthusiasts, embroidery aficionados and design students. It is priced at Rs 2995 and available at leading book stores.
